Welcoming Newborn Elephant 'Jiumei' – A New Member Joins China's Asian Elephant Population!
CCTV News:Yesterday (22nd) morning, at the China Yunnan Asian Elephant Gene Bank and Rescue Center in Xishuangbanna Wild Elephant Valley, a female elephant gave birth to a baby elephant, adding another new member to China's Asian elephant family.

This baby elephant is the first elephant baby born this year at the Gene Bank and Rescue Center, and also the center's ninth elephant baby. Staff members affectionately named her 'Jiumei' (Nine Sister).
Asian Elephant Gene Bank and Rescue Center Elephant Doctor Bo Mingwei:This baby elephant, after a gestation period of 693 days and nursing care by the large elephant 693, was born at 8:16 AM on February 22nd, weighing 85 kilograms and 94 centimeters tall. The baby elephant is in very good condition and stood up in 40 minutes.
According to staff, 'Jiumei's' mother is 32 years old and is a first-time mother, and both mother and daughter are currently safe and well. Staff are providing the mother and daughter with necessary care. The China Yunnan Asian Elephant Gene Bank and Rescue Center was established in November 2008 and has participated in more than 20 wild elephant rescues. Currently, 11 Asian wild elephants are being cared for and trained at the center. The center has accumulated valuable practical experience in the rescue, breeding and artificial rearing of Asian elephants.
