Injured Gray Crane Baby Remains in Jinzhou to Spend the Summer!

April 4, 2020, volunteer patrols in the daily process, in the gray crane overwintering area at the downstream of Xiaoling River, a wounded gray crane chick was discovered. The gray crane chick had a visible injury on its back, causing some feathers to break and bleed, sticking together. It remained on its back like a small stick stuck in its back. The injury it suffered is likely the reason it abandoned its migration. It might stay in Jinzhou for a summer, waiting for its companions to return to Jinzhou for winter.
After careful observation, this gray crane chick has a green ring on its left foot and a tracker on its right foot, which is a gray crane chick tracked by a research department. The volunteers immediately contacted the National Ringing Center and learned that this was a gray crane chick tracked by the Beijing Forestry University research team since early August last year in the western gray crane breeding ground in Mongolia, and it was less than one year old.
It also has a brother who was tracked simultaneously and has already migrated with the gray crane flock to the breeding ground. It was left alone in Jinzhou's wintering area. Recently, it has been active in the overwintering area and its movements are normal, it can still fly at a speed of 30 kilometers per hour. The Beijing Forestry University research team also believes that there is still a group of gray cranes staying in Jinzhou for winter, which was unexpected.
The volunteers will take photos of the gray crane and transmit them to the Beijing Forestry University research team. After discussion, it was considered that this gray crane may have been injured by poaching and lost the ability to migrate long distances, so it is likely to stay in Jinzhou for the whole summer. Because its activity area is in a densely populated area, it is prone to harm from poachers. The volunteers call on everyone to come together to protect this little gray crane baby, let it return to Jinzhou safely and spend the summer, waiting for its family to return from afar to winter together.
