Life is Ultimately Ordinary
Zhou Guofeng said: The lowest state of life is ordinary, second is extraordinary, and the highest is returning to simplicity.
Everyone wants to stand out, so they desperately make money, study, and seek status, but later look back and see the road they've taken, the things they've obtained, and their lives, they're still ordinary people. We put in all our effort to become scarred, but we're still unsatisfied, money isn't as much as others have, status isn't high, ideals aren't truly realized, and there's endless worry inside.
When we reach a certain age, we gradually understand that life is ultimately ordinary. No one can do everything as they wish, most of the time, we're against the wind, indignant, and out of sync with the times. When we realize we're an ordinary person, we suddenly become truly mature…
For our desires, we often live as if 'imprisoned.'Money, ideals, status, family, love… are like walls, enclosing us. Beyond the walls is spring and flowers, but inside it's still cold wind and rain, sometimes with snowflakes. In fact, every wall has a door, vaguely visible, but we don't see it, nor do we want to truly step out of it.
Once, during a psychology tutor's lecture, he asked me, 'Don't you often feel tired?' I said, 'Yes?' He asked again, 'Why are you so tired?' I suddenly froze, unable to answer. What I need, what I'm pursuing, I'm even confused about myself. Later, I thought about it for a long time, and suddenly realized I'd lost my ideals, 'money, emotion, benefit' remained in my heart.
For money, I've toiled a lifetime. Nowadays, if you don't have money, you can't move an inch. Even if you stay at home, watching TV and drinking water, you need money. Someone says, 'Money is the greatest asset a person can have.' For example, if I don't have money, I don't even have the courage to live. When speaking in front of others, I have to be cautious. But I don't really lack money; at least I can live a life without worries, and I've prepared a pension for myself. But I feel my money is too little, my house isn't big enough, my car isn't good enough, and I haven't prepared enough funds for my children to start a business. So I keep going to earn money, no matter how hard or tiring, I can't stop.
For love, I'm trapped for a lifetime. As a middle-aged man, you have elderly parents and young children, no one helps with the hardships of life, no one understands your worries. You hope for a confidante, who can accompany you to struggle, understand you, and appear whenever you need it. You'll naturally become tired of marriage and long for freedom in life, and more desire 'true love for a lifetime.'
For profit, I'm plagued for a lifetime. 'Seeking profit and avoiding harm' is human instinct. Everyone wants to be the beneficiary, and wants to be spared the effort. When others get, and we don't, we're indignant and feel that heaven isn't fair. We see others' gains, but often don't see the sweat they've poured. Many people, for profit, don't hesitate to use unscrupulous means, and even deceive others, willing to be a petty person for a lifetime.
In life, we will eventually come to terms with our ordinariness. There are too many unknowns in life. Live in the present, cherish today, that's enough.Author: Plain Food and Simple Fare.
