Take Confucianism, discard Buddhism, take Taoism, think freely

So-called 'not far from men, the Great Way is simple', as the three pillars of Chinese culture – Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism – are actually not high and mighty, but closely related to our lives and daily routines. Master Niu Gen of Mongolia said this brilliantly: Confucianism's highest state is 'taking what is needed', Buddhism's is 'letting go', and Taoism's is 'thinking freely'. The highest state of Confucianism and Taoism is this three sentences, nine characters.

In Chinese history, there have been other 'life stages' sayings, of which three are most famous, and can be contrasted and understood against Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism.

Confucianism is pursuing entering the world, emphasizing doing things, requiring vigorous, brave, and unwavering will. Summarized in three words, it is 'taking what is needed'.

What is 'taking what is needed'? Let's take a look at this 'Ren' character—one 'person' on the left, one 'need' on the right, together it becomes 'the need of people', people in the world have various spiritual or survival needs, to satisfy these needs, you need to get them, take them, and take the right ones, that's taking what is needed.

How to 'take what is needed'? Wang Kuo-wei's 'Talk on Poetry' proposed three levels of achievement. This three levels reflect Confucianism's spirit, so it's the path.

First level: 'Last night's west wind rustles the willows, alone on the high tower, gazing at the end of the road'—it's full of ambition, high-mindedness, and foresight. In life, ambition determines direction and pattern determines height. So, when doing things, you must first set your heart's ambition; when achieving things, you must first broaden your mind's pattern.

Second level: 'Wearing the belt becomes looser, but never regrets, for her, one becomes haggard'—things require effort to achieve, the greater the undertaking, the more effort and sacrifice are needed, even to endure greater hardships and difficulties. In this world, 'difficulties and hardships lead to jade', and 'the gentleman should always be self-strengthening'. No matter how, 'heaven's movement is constant, gentleman self-strengthening'.

Third level: 'Searching for her among the thousands of people, suddenly turning back, she is right in the flickering lights'—it's about maturing and growing through hardship, finally having a breakthrough, and seeing the truth. This contains an important principle, as expressed by Su Dongpo: 'Accumulate a thick base, then let it burst forth'. Only by accumulating a thick base can it burst forth. People should do this, just keep accumulating, wait for the breakthrough.

This is the complete path of 'taking what is needed', which is the complete process of achieving success in business.

Take Taoism, emphasizing the natural, emphasizing naturalness, requiring clear understanding of the Dao, observing the heavens and the earth, looking at the world with an indifferent gaze.

What is 'thinking freely'? Philosopherproposed the 'Four Levels of Human Life' which is the highest level of Taoism, so it is the path.

First, the natural level. Some people do things, perhaps just following their instinct or the customs of society, not necessarily unethical, but they are inevitably utilitarian, and easily fall into selfishness and narrow-mindedness.

Second, the utilitarian level. Some people, in order to seek personal gain, actively think and do things, although they may not be unethical, but they are utilitarian, and easily fall into selfishness and narrow-mindedness.

Third, the moral level. Some people have surpassed themselves and began to consider benefiting others, such as for moral righteousness, public welfare, and the well-being of all beings. Their vision has gone beyond themselves and focused on the world, and their mental and stature have reached the spiritual level.

Fourth, the Tian Ren level. When a person's vision expands to the entire universe and the heavens, their eyes look towards the fundamental laws of things, they reach unity between heaven and man. At this time, they no longer need to think, because the universe is their brain, and they know everything, like a computer connected to the internet. This state is the highest state, so it is the highest state of Taoism.

These four levels, the higher the level, the more one can think freely. As you move further from the ground, it's hard to block your eyes and obstacles; when you stand on the peak, the world is small. People who are stuck in the middle level, although struggling and painful, this is the opportunity for breakthrough. Because seeing is the only way to come out; experiencing, you can understand; it's a matter of growth.

Thinking freely is to increase your vision and perspective. As you move further, you'll see things more broadly and at a higher level. The farther you go, the broader your perspective and the more open your mind will be. If you can't think freely, it's often because you're trying to block your mind and trap yourself.
