March 24th, staff from the Lilun District Ecological Forestry Development Center delivered a flightless Israeli national bird, ‘Daisheng’, to the Wildlife Center.

“I found a ‘strange bird’, it looked like it was dying, unable to fly anymore, you guys should take a look……” A few days earlier, Mr. Wang called the Lilun District Ecological Forestry Development Center for help after he received a call from Mr. Chou, a junior trainee.

Upon receiving the notification, the center’s staff immediately rushed to the scene to handle the situation. After observation, the bird, named Daisheng, was identified as an adult bird with a poor mental state, requiring referral to a rescue point for detailed examination.

“This bird isn’t an ordinary bird; it’s ‘Daisheng’, a Zhejiang Province key protected terrestrial wild animal, a national Level Three protected bird, and also the national bird of Israel, listed in the ‘World Conservation Union’ (IUCN) International Red List of Birds.” According to the Lilun District Ecological Forestry Development Center staff.

Daisheng mainly lives in forests with dense trees, feeding on insects. Daisheng primarily feeds on pine larvae, mole crickets, soldier beetles, walking sticks, and the larvae of bark beetles, playing a relatively important role in protecting forests and farmland.

After the center’s staff sent the bird to the rescue point for examination, it was found that the bird was unable to fly normally due to poisoning.

To this end, rescue personnel administered an antidote injection and supplemented it with a suitable amount of glucose, placing it in a cage for timed observation.

The reporter saw that Daisheng’s feathers were vividly colored, and its most distinctive feature was its upright, brown, filamentous crest.

The top of the crest has a black spot, interestingly, the crest is usually folded down and hidden, but when it is frightened, chirps, or feeds on the ground, the crest rises up, like an open fan, and moves with the chirping, rising and falling.

Staff said that the bird’s condition is stable and will be released after Daisheng is treated.
