Perhaps the most beautiful snow leopard in the world, and also the elegant king of the snow mountains

As a matter of fact, I believe the snow leopard would be my top choice if I were to select the most beautiful felid. Snow leopards exude an air of elegance and agility for me, yet they are truly the kings of the snow mountains, the strongest hunters above the snowlines.

Bearing a fondness for snow leopards, today’s editor would like to introduce this animal, which is known as the ‘king of the snow mountains’ together with everyone.

The Snow Leopard: King of the Snows

Snow leopards, like other members of the pantherine lineage, arebelong to the pantherine subfamily Pantherinae, and the genus Panthera. They primarily inhabit the rocky areas of the mid-Asian and South Asian high plateaus, which has earned them the title ‘king of the snow mountains.’ AndIn China, we are home to the world’s largest population of snow leopards, accounting for approximately 40% of the global snow leopard population.

Snow leopards have thick, dense, white fur, with circular markings distributed across their bodies, earning them the name ‘panther.’ However, snow leopards’ markings, from the forelimbs to the hindlimbs, gradually increase in size, and the most distinctive feature of snow leopards is their long tail, which can be as long as their entire body.

Although snow leopards’ long tails are quite distinctive, making people want to touch them, these tails are not for showing off. For survival in the snow mountains, this long tail helps snow leopards maintain balance when jumping across large gaps, facilitating their ability to quickly adjust their postures for another attack during hunting. Because snow leopards’ primary prey are equally adept climbers, like rock goats.

Perhaps everyone has seen a set of pictures showing snow leopards carrying their tails, and there is a saying that they do this to prevent cold air from entering their lungs, thus reducing their body heat loss. However, if you look closely, most snow leopards kept in captivity do this, and rarely seen snow leopards in the wild do this. Therefore, animal behaviorists analyze that the snow leopard’s habit of carrying its tail may be due to psychological stress, a form of stereotyped behavior, despite their apparent cuteness, there is an underlying sadness.

Furthermore, snow leopards’ ability to withstand extreme snow mountain climates comes from their luxurious fur. Snow leopards’ fur is longer than that of most other big cats, especially the fur before the chest and abdomen is longer, reaching more than 12cm. This fur is fine and dense, and will change with temperature and influence. But unlike the Siamese cat at home, snow leopards’ fur becomes lighter when the weather is cold, and turns darker when the temperature rises and the snow melts. This change helps snow leopards to hide themselves in the environment, increasing their hunting success rate.

Where are the snow leopards in the picture?

Many cat lovers like to rank big cats, with lions and tigers constantly debated, the American leopard (also known as the American tiger) has steadily occupied the position of cat number three. However, the fourth position in the cat ranking is also occupied by many cat lovers. Some people believe that it should be the leopard, while others think it should be the snow leopard, although this is just a casual talk, it does not mean that they will really fight each other. However, this also shows the strength of snow leopards. But behind their apparent strength, there is an undisclosed hardship –

Increasingly difficult living conditions

Snow leopards’ main prey are rock goats, northern goats, and horned sheep. They occasionally prey on smaller animals, such as plateau rabbits, mice, marmots, and birds. When food is short, snow leopards will eat plants to survive.

When there is no more food on the snow mountain, snow leopards will sneak into human settlements to attack livestock. Unlike other large felids, snow leopards are shy and docile, and have never been recorded as eating or attacking humans. However, because livestock and property were damaged, snow leopards were hunted for retaliatory killings.

The main reason for food shortage is the expansion of human settlements, which has changed the ecology of the plateau. Fortunately, snow leopards have been listed as flagship species, which can receive more protection.

Because snow leopards’ living environment requirements are very high, it is difficult to breed them artificially. In most zoos, it is difficult to see snow leopards. Even in China, where the largest number of snow leopards live, there is only one zoo with the conditions to keep them.

I would rather this beautiful life live on its own snow mountains, as a peaceful ‘king of the snow mountains.’

Although they belong to the pantherine subfamily and the genus Panthera, snow leopards are different from lions and tigers, they cannot roar or growl like them, but instead, they can only make ‘woo’, ‘old Wu’ and ‘brain no’ sounds. But they are a little lower than them.
