Short-eared Owls Take Flight in Hat Mountain, Yanji City – A Rare Sight
Recently, photographer Li Zhuyiyi captured a group of short-eared owl photos in Hat Mountain, Yanji City.


Short-eared owls are birds of the order Strigiformes and the family Strigidae. They are small in stature, with a body length of about 38-40 cm, a tawny-brown owl. With long wings, a distinctive facial appearance, and short tufts of ear feathers that are hidden outdoors and not visible, their eyes are bright yellow, and their eye rings are dark. The upper body is yellowish-brown, covered with black and yellowish-brown transverse stripes; the lower body is yellowish-brown, with deep brown transverse stripes.

Short-eared owls are easily visible in flight with their black wrist markings, they inhabit open fields, and commonly feed on mice, birds, insects, and amphibians. They are one of the most widely distributed owls and are a national secondary-level protected animal.
