No Hummingbirds in China? Am I Blind All These Years?

I believe many people have witnessed hummingbirds collecting nectar.

It wasn't until today that I realized

Actually, there are no hummingbirds distributed throughout all of China

But how do I explain what I saw?

I'm sure there are many people like me who had the same 'misunderstanding'

I always thought it was a hummingbird

In reality, hummingbirds are only found in the Americas

This guy…

is a hovering moth..

Small-bodied long-beaked moth Macroglossum stellatarum

Except for having two more pairs of antennae and lacking feathers in its wings

From its habits, appearance, and flight, it's extremely similar to a hummingbird

Therefore, it's also called a hummingbird moth

I felt like this guy was so cute when I looked at it face to face....

Records show that

Small-bodied long-beaked moth has a habit of collecting nectar at fixed locations

They will go to the same flowerbed at the same time every day

They especially like long and narrow plants rich in nectar

Because they can use their long beaks to avoid competition with other insects

Like clove, jasmine, and golden sage, these are their favorites

Small-bodied long-beaked moth is also widely distributed throughout China, almost covering the entire country

However, it's extremely rare in northern areas

When this guy is not in flight

it's simply a hovering moth…

I often saw this moth when I was a child

I always thought it was a hummingbird

Today, I finally solved one of my ancient mysteries
