Gray-faced Buzzard First Record Species Discovered in Shangnan, Shaanxi

Recently, staff from the Shaanxi Shangnan Forestry Bureau discovered a national Level II protected animal belonging to the falcon order, eagle family, Gray-faced Buzzard, in the Jinsha Gorge spiral cliff within the New Ridge Provincial Nature Reserve while reviewing infrared-triggered camera photos. The discovery included 12 photos and 4 video segments. According to relevant records, this raptor species is rare in population and is the first record of Gray-faced Buzzard in Shangnan.

Since 2018, the Shangnan County had set up 17 infrared automatic trigger cameras in the New Ridge Nature Reserve, and has captured 7 species of mammals, 11 species of birds, including national Level II protected animals such as the Reeves' gazelle, pygmy owl, gray owl, tawny eagle, and Gray-faced Buzzard, as well as such as leopard cat, Asian badger, and hog badger.
