Injured 'Hawk' Successfully Rescued by Dengkou Forest Public Security
On April 1, 2020, at noon, the Dengkou Forest Public Security Bureau received a report from a citizen, discovering a ‘hawk’ that couldn’t fly, ‘come quickly to save it.’
Following the report, the Dengkou Forest Public Security Bureau immediately dispatched the Sandstorm Prevention and Control Station to respond. Officers Jia Ai Lin and Li Chunliang quickly contacted the reporter according to the instructions and immediately rushed to the scene to provide assistance. According to the reporter, while they were pulling up long corn and orange poles in the field, they found a large bird that looked like a hawk. As they loaded the vehicle, the bird didn’t fly, so they immediately reported for help.
The officers brought the ‘hawk’ back to the Forest Public Security Bureau, contacted a veterinarian to examine and treat it. After examination, it was found that its left wing was fractured, possibly caused by collision with power lines while flying. The veterinarian bandaged it and applied medication. Currently, the Dengkou Forest Public Security Bureau has arranged officers to carefully raise it, and will release it back into nature after it recovers. After careful identification by the officers, the ‘hawk’ is a national level two protected animal – the Sculptor Hawk.
Introduction: Sculptor HawkBelongs to the Falconiformes order and Accipitridae family, it is a nocturnal predatory bird, with a total length of about 80cm, males and females are similar, the long ear cover is prominent, the plumage is generally yellowish-brown, with black spots and streaks, the beak is strong and hooked, the base of the mouth is covered with hard bristles, the feet are strong and powerful, often covered with feathers, the fourth toe can turn backward, which is helpful for climbing, the claws are large and sharp, the chest feathers have distinct patterns, it often lives in remote forests, active all day, flies slowly and silently, usually flying close to the ground. It has a wide diet, mainly feeding on various rodents, also eating rabbits, frogs, hedgehogs, insects, pheasants, and other birds.
