Wang Yangming: Maintain a Calm Heart During Busy Times, and a Focused One During Quiet Times! (Recommended to Collect)
Time is fair to everyone, giving them all the same amount of time.
There are 365 days in a year, and 24 hours in a day.
Some people live busy lives, while others pause to appreciate.
The difference here can be found within one's heart.
1. Be calm when busy
In life, being busy is unavoidable.
Busy work and lack of rest for the body is a kind of busyness;
Excessive thinking and a restless heart are also a kind of busyness.
Wang Yangming's disciple once asked him, 'When you're busy, why do you do it? If there's nothing to do, you should still be busy. Why?'
The disciple felt troubled and hoped for his teacher's guidance.
Wang Yangming gave an example: 'Even when eating, if there's something on your mind, your heart won't be at peace. This is because your heart has become accustomed to being busy, making it impossible to control.'
Some people are carried away by busy lives, unable to find peace no matter what they do.
Take the simple act of eating as an example. A person sits at the table with a television in front of their eyes and a phone in their hand.
They don't really have any urgent matters to attend to; they just can't keep their minds focused.
They can't eat properly, nor can they sleep soundly.
They always feel tired, and their bodies don't get adequate rest.
Wang Yangming proposed a solution: 'The skill of being single-minded.'
'Single-mindedness' refers to focusing on doing one thing well.
With a single-minded heart, how could you have time for idle chatter and meddling?
Confucius once said, 'People who do not have perseverance will never achieve anything in life.'
Throughout history, those who have achieved great things have this perseverance.
As long as your heart is focused, you can weather any storm and sit calmly fishing.
2. Keep your heart from being empty
Many people believe that eating, drinking, and playing are the best states of life, which is not true.
A person who has become accustomed to being busy will feel lost when they have free time.
says: 'A person with a long time to spare should have a vigorous body.'
Just as the body is like this, so is the heart.
says: 'If you are too idle, you will be stolen by life.'
If you do nothing all day, you will become bored and start to think randomly.
Therefore, even if you have free time, you shouldn't let your heart wander aimlessly.
During his exile at Longchang, Wang Yangming only served as a small messenger officer.
Due to his low position and lack of power, Wang Yangming became a 'free man,' spending his days meditating and contemplating the teachings of the sages.
Persistence pays off for those who are diligent.
After a long period of quiet contemplation, one night, Wang Yangming suddenly realized the principles of 'investigating objects to gain knowledge.'

This period of idle contemplation became a major turning point in Wang Yangming's life, known as 'the enlightenment at Longchang.'
A person's thoughts and reflections during idle time can unconsciously determine their future.
When you have free time, it's good to charge your mind.
Cultivate your mind and become a more fulfilling person.
