During the Qingming Festival, CCTV News' new media launched a special online live broadcast program. The live broadcast location was set at Wangjia Bird Watching Platform in Dragon Lake Wetland at 10:00 AM. Right here, the gathering of migratory birds brought back to life the Dragon Lake that had been silent for a winter. From the bird watching platform, looking out, migratory birds were like pearls scattered in the rippling blue waters of the lake.

Every year in the spring, Dragon Lake wetland welcomes a large number of north-returning migratory birds. According to monitoring, the number and quantity of migratory bird species residing and stopping at Dragon Lake in 2019 have been continuously increasing, exceeding 3 million, and nine species of national first-class protected birds. It can be said that in the season of migratory birds, nearly one-fifth of the white cranes and one-third of the Oriental white storks in the world have once rested at Dragon Lake.

In addition, together with national treasures such as giant pandas, South Chinese tigers, and Yunnan golden monkeys, and the internationally endangered species Chinese fall sandpiper, blue-headed duck, white-tailed eagle, white crane, etc., also have different numbers distributed in the Dragon Lake ecological zone during the migratory season of birds. In spring 2019, the protection area also detected for the first time the national first-class protected animal giant sea eagle.

As of the end of March, 15 species of migratory birds have been observed, and more than 150,000 geese and ducks have been observed on a single day, 630+ Oriental white storks, and a large number of white cranes have also migrated to Dragon Lake, and will reach the peak of migration in early April.

According to the monitoring personnel, due to the successful implementation of the 2019 Liaohe River diversion project, the water level of Dragon Lake is guaranteed, the water volume is abundant, vegetation recovers, which provides a good habitat for these rare wild birds. Experts expect that this spring, the number and quantity of migratory birds will significantly exceed the highest value in previous years.
