Longchang, Fujian: Ecological Restoration – Transforming Migratory Birds into Resident Birds

Longchang: Ecological Restoration – Turning Migratory Birds into Resident Birds

Recently, wildlife photographers Zhu Yushan and Liu Hui once again came to the Datong Town Shifugun, Longchang County, using cameras to observe and record the habitat and breeding of the endangered Hainan Jay.

Wildlife Photographer Zhu Yushan: We found that this Hainan Jay was on April 20th of last year, and we calculated it. Because it was its breeding period, the nesting and courtship we didn’t record earlier, so we came to observe in advance. Today we went to the same place last year to see if it could reproduce there this year.

On April 20, 2019, Zhu Yushan and Forestry Bureau officer Qiu Jiarui and Liu Hui discovered two Hainan Jays and their nests with chicks and an egg in a water area in Shifugun, Datong Town. Subsequently, they built an observation point about 100 meters away from the nest and insisted on shooting and recording from dawn to dusk every day, with video and image data exceeding 400G, finally clarifying the breeding process of the Hainan Jay and completing the Hainan Jay’s breeding materials, which are extremely rare in the world.

Wildlife Photographer Zhu Yushan: We have been tracking it non-stop for 48 days, observing its every move every morning and evening, recording its different changes from nesting to chicks flying away, it is a rare set of footage.

Talking about the opportunity to become a wildlife photographer, Zhu Yushan told us that he was fascinated by watching many people take pictures of birds in the Three-River Wetland Park six years ago, so he joined the bird watching team. According to Zhu Yushan and Liu Hui’s statistics, they have photographed nearly 300 bird species in Longchang County since 2014, including summer migratory birds, winter migratory birds, resident birds and over-season birds, about 290 species, almost 300 species.

Wildlife Photographer Zhu Yushan: We and two people from the Forestry Bureau, Liu Hui, have been photographing for about 300 or so since 2014, including about 20 or so national level protected animals, endangered animals and level 2 protected animals, and other level 3 protected birds, which is a lot of 200 or so.

Birds are the guardians of the forest, an important part of the natural ecosystem, playing an irreplaceable role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. In recent years, Longchang County has continuously increased the protection of wild animals and birds through “Bird Watching Week” activities, widely publicized bird, wild plants and animals protection knowledge and relevant laws and regulations, guided the public to continuously improve their awareness of protecting wild animals and plants, strengthen their legal awareness, and consciously become protectors of wild animals and plants and disseminators of socialist ecological civilization values.

Deputy Director Liu Hui of the Tingjiang National Wetland Park: In terms of protecting birds, there has been widespread consensus, and we, the Forestry Bureau, have established certain contacts with relevant schools, we have entered campuses to carry out parent-child activities and popularize the knowledge of loving birds, protecting birds and protecting wild animals, and many schools have carried out this parent-child activity.

In recent years, Longchang County has continuously promoted theof soil erosion, actively promoted ecological civilization construction, and achieved significant results in ecological protection and restoration. The former “Flame Mountain” has now become “Flower and Fruit Mountain”, providing a good habitat for wild birds.

Deputy Director Liu Hui of the Tingjiang National Wetland Park: If the ecological environment is good, it provides the habitat environment for birds, and if the ecological environment is not good, its bird habitat will be destroyed. Love birds, protect birds together, build a human-bird living community, birds and people live in the same earth village, I hope that the vast majority of citizens love birds, eliminate the bad habit of eating wild animals.
