Protected Animal Painted Snipe Spotted in Dianchi Wetlands

Xinhua News Agency Kunming, April 6 (reporter Pang Mingguang) Recently, photography enthusiasts in Kunming, Yunnan Province, photographed a large water bird with copper-brown feathers at the southern shore of Dianchi Lake, Dianchi National Wetland Park. Relevant experts identified the water bird as the protected animal, the Cuviers' Beak (Cathalestes curvirostris).

It is understood that Cuviers' Beak is a national level two protected animal, belonging to the order Pelecaniformes and the Beak family. Its feathers are mostly copper-brown, and it is a rare bird species closely related to the Scarlet Ibis. Cuviers' Beaks mainly inhabit warm rivers, lakes and marshes, they like to live in groups and often gather with other Beaks and Herons, mainly feeding on aquatic insects, shrimp and shellfish.

Due to the fact that Cuviers' Beaks had not been observed in China for many consecutive years, the 'China Red Book on Endangered Animals' once announced that Cuviers' Beaks had disappeared from China.

In recent years, the management of Dianchi Lake has achieved good results, providing a good habitat and sufficient food sources for wild birds, and more and more wild birds have begun to frequently visit Dianchi Lake and surrounding wetlands. (All images provided by Li Jixing).
