When swimming in the water, the neck is bent and slightly resembles 'S' shape. There is a distinct spherical bulge at the base of the mouth, and the males are larger, while the females are not very developed. The eyes are deep brown, the mouth is orange yellow, and the base and ball are black. The feet and toes are gray-black. They live in lakes, rivers or swamps. They walk on the ground clumsily, but are good at swimming. They stretch their heads straight when flying, but rarely make a sound, so they are also called 'silent gulls'.

They build nests in reed thickets, composed of water plants and mud, with grass and down inside, and lay 5-7 eggs in summer, which is the most prolific laying season for gulls; the eggs are blue-green and weigh about 340 grams; they are incubated by the female, and the incubation period is 35-36 days. Both parents jointly feed the chicks. They are distributed in Europe, North Africa, Central and Southern Asia.
