Over the past few days, many photographers in Guiyang have heard of a small, colorful blue-throated sunbird that has migrated through the flower creeks in Gaohua Township, Gaoshan Village, high slopes, and have flocked to the village where the blue-throated sunbird often stops to forage and rest, waiting to capture the beautiful blue-throated sunbird.
According to Mr. Wang Yuqi, a Miao villager in Gaoshan Village, in recent years, with the continuous improvement of Gaohua’s farmland-to-forest ecological restoration and the strengthening of villagers’ love for birds and protection of birds, the number of blue-throated sunbirds passing through Gaohua Township has increased, attracting many domestic and foreign bird lovers and photographers to admire and photograph, and he has more than 30 photographers on his porch in front of his house from morning until afternoon.
Blue-throated Sunbird
Scientific name: Aethopyga gouldiae
A small bird, male body length 13-16cm, female body length 9-11cm.
The blue-throated sunbird has a slender and downward-curved beak, male forehead to head and chin and throat are iridescent purple blue, the back, chest, head sides and neck sides are scarlet red, there is a purple blue spot behind the ears and on the chest sides, which is very conspicuous under the surrounding scarlet red, the waist and abdomen are yellow, the central tail feathers are elongated, purple blue. Female birds are olive green on the upper body, with yellow waist, throat to chest is gray green, the rest of the lower body is green yellow. Listed in the 2013 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species version 3.1 – Least Concern.
The blue-throated sunbird inhabits evergreen broadleaf forests, gullies, monsoon forests and evergreen and deciduous mixed forests at an altitude of 1000-3500m. It usually travels alone or in pairs, and sometimes sees 3-5 or 10-20 birds in groups, maintaining a certain distance, moving among flowering trees or canopy parasitic plants, rarely foraging among flowers on the ground. It mainly feeds on nectar, also eats insects and other animal food. Distributed in China, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and Pakistan Northeast in winter.The blue-throated sunbird’s plumage is vibrant, it is a good ornamental bird, and because it feeds on nectar and insects, it also has significance in pollen spreading and insect pest control.Mainly distributed in Southwest China, it is one of the most widely distributed and numerous species in the sunbird family in China.
Diet: Mainly feeds on nectar, also eats insects and other animal food. It inhabits evergreen broadleaf forests, gullies, monsoon forests and evergreen and deciduous mixed forests at an altitude of 1000-3500m, it also enters sparse tree and grass slopes, orchards, fields and trees on the banks of rivers and roads, sometimes seen in bamboo groves and shrubs.
