Shennongjia Forest District: Did a Prehistoric Animal, the '' (Ass-Headed Wolf), Reappear After 500,000 Years?

In China's Hubei Province, there is a vast area of pristine forests – Shennongjia Forest District. Legend has it that Shen Nong, a mythical emperor, once came here to collect herbs, hence the area was named Shennongjia by later generations. Within Shennongjia Forest District, there are many locations named after Shen Nong.

Shennongjia covers an area of over 3,000 square kilometers, it is the largest expanse of original forest in China. Here, the mountains are steep and rugged, and the scenery is beautiful, with an average altitude of 1700 meters, earning it the reputation of 'the Backbone of Central China'

Shennongjia Forest District is not only rich in vegetation, but also home to numerous rare and endangered animals, such as the Chinese giant salamander, the clouded leopard, the golden jackal, the Asiatic black bear, and the Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey. Among these many rare and endangered animals, there is also a very mysterious animal – the '' (Lùtóuláng), literally '' (ass-headed wolf).

It is said that local residents in Shennongjia Forest District discovered an animal with a head resembling an ass and a body like a wolf. Locals describe this animal as being fiercely aggressive and brutal, emitting a donkey-like bleating sound, and even consuming livestock. People call it '' (ass-headed wolf). From the 1970s to the late 1980s, many local residents discovered traces of '' (ass-headed wolf) activity.

Given the vividness of the '' (ass-headed wolf) rumors, does this animal actually exist?

To this end, numerous biologists have repeatedly visited Shennongjia Forest District to search for '' (ass-headed wolf). After several searches, biologists returned in disappointment, unable to find direct evidence to prove the existence of '' (ass-headed wolf). The issue of whether '' (ass-headed wolf) exists is currently unable to be concluded by scientists.

Some scientists speculate that '' (ass-headed wolf) may be a prehistoric animal – the '' (Shākuàng), literally 'Saiga'

'' (Saiga) fossils have been unearthed in various locations worldwide, including China, dating back 5 million years. The '' (Saiga) has a head and body that resemble an ass, with claws on its feet and certain parts of its body similar to those of rhinoceroses, horses, and gorillas.

Scientists generally believe that '' (Saiga) has long been extinct. However, there is also a view that it is not ruled out. Because Shennongjia has vast areas of original forests, and many unique species live there, which have disappeared elsewhere. '' (Saiga) may have survived in the deep recesses of Shennongjia, living a secluded life. But with the expansion of human activities, it has unintentionally come into contact with humans, which has led to eyewitness accounts.

Another explanation is that '' (ass-headed wolf) is a hybrid of donkeys and wolves.

According to local accounts, if '' (ass-headed wolf) has a donkey-like head and a wolf-like body, could it be the result of hybridization between the two?

Comparing the chromosomes of donkeys and wolves, these two animals differ by 16 chromosomes, which makes it virtually impossible for them to reproduce. Even if donkeys and wolves were to reproduce, infertile '' (ass-headed wolf) cannot continue to reproduce offspring.

Therefore, '' (ass-headed wolf) should not be a hybrid species.

Shennongjia Forest District has a good ecological environment, abundant forest resources, and a large area, with little human disturbance. Under such favorable natural conditions, it is not ruled out that '' (ass-headed wolf) may have migrated to the deeper recesses of Shennongjia to live to avoid contact with humans.
