Recently, researchers from the University of New Mexico and the Kibale Chimpanzee Project in Uganda discoveredChimpanzees' aging process is similar to humansThe team published a paper inThe National Academy of Sciences Proceedingsdescribing their 20-year study of chimpanzees living in the Kibale National Park and their aging process.Previous research has shown thatAs people age, the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis will change, this system plays a role in people's response to stress, leading to
cortisolincreased synthesis. Cortisol is a hormone that plays a role in regulating metabolism and blood pressure. Previous studies have also shown thatExcessive cortisol can lead to decreased cognitive function, weakened immune systems, and inflammation, all of which are symptoms of human agingIt seems that chimpanzees are also experiencing a similar process. The team's work was conducted inalmost natural environmentsstudying chimpanzees' physiological and behavioral characteristics. As part of this work, team members placed plastic bags in the trees where chimpanzees lived to collect urine samples from 59 adult chimpanzees. The team has collected about 20 years' worth of samples. When analyzing the urine composition, researchers found that as chimpanzees aged, cortisol levels also increased, and hormone levels increases could not be attributed to reproductive activity or social status. They believe that this indicates that chimpanzees' aging process is similar to humans'.
The researchers found that whenmales take action towards female chimps with mating intentions, and female chimps accept sexual behavior, cortisol levels are highestThey also pointed out that the primitive chimpanzee's cortisol level increased is a primitive attribute, not a byproduct of aging.
