Look! A Juvenile Spotted Seal Washes Ashore on Lushunkou Coast – Milk Hairs Not Yet Gone

On March 13th at 3:00 PM, a stranded juvenile spotted seal appeared on the coast of Lushunkou Salt Field New Village. Two aquaculture farm workers discovered it and immediately reported it upon receiving the news. After receiving the news, Lushunkou District Fisheries Administration immediately arrived at the scene and reported to the Lushunkou District Agricultural Development Service Center and Dalian Fisheries Bureau.

At 5:30 PM, the rescue vehicle of the Liaoning Ocean University of Fisheries arrived at the scene. According to the on-site investigation, the spotted seal pup was in good condition and was in the late stage of lactation, and its milk hairs had not yet fallen out. The rescue vehicle took the spotted seal away and prepared to provide artificial feeding for a period of time, and after meeting the release conditions, it would be released back into the sea.

From December to April each year, the waters of Dalian will welcome spotted seals from the distant oceans. Spotted seals are the only pinnipeds that can reproduce in Chinese sea areas. They belong to the second-level national protected animals. The Bohai Sea breeding area in Dalian's Liaodong Bay is the southernmost breeding area among the world's eight breeding areas of spotted seals. Every winter and spring, spotted seals migrate from the Pacific Ocean to the northern waters of Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea, and give birth and raise spotted seal pups on sea ice.
