River Management Shows Effectiveness; Ducks Visit in Droves

On March 2nd, Da Tong Hui-zuo Tu-zuo Autonomous County, the North Kawa River was seen with over 30 ducks swimming, creating a unique landscape that attracted passersby to stop and take photos.
That day at 10:30 AM, after the snow melted, the newly-melted snow in Da Tong. On the North Kawa River, ducks swam in small groups from the riverbank to the middle, foraging and playing in the water.
Walking along the North Kawa River, two yellow ducks resembled a couple, inseparable, sometimes diving into the water and sometimes quickly swimming on the surface, occasionally making ‘ga ga’ sounds.
As the weather warmed up, more and more people were exercising and hiking along the North Kawa River. Seeing the large flocks of ducks on the river surface, many people stopped to take pictures.
An old gentleman said, ‘In recent years, the channel has become cleaner, and the fish that disappeared have returned. Ducks often come to visit, and when they have nothing to do, they count the ducks on the water.’
“Generally, the ducks appear around 10 AM. At their peak, there are 170+ ducks, and these ducks seem to be of different colors and sizes.” The old gentleman said.
Da Tong County has North Kawa River, Dong Xia River, Gua La River, Bao Ku River, and He Lin River – five major rivers. To strengthen water management, after establishing the River Chief System in 2016, a comprehensive Lake Chief System was established, and all rivers and lakes within the county were assigned River Chiefs. The responsibilities of the county, townships, and villages, as well as other involved parties, were clearly defined, and the three levels of River Chiefs and other involved parties were implemented in detail.
Bridgehead Town River Chief Shi Zhengfu said, ‘Bridgehead Town has established 33 river patrol teams, and has recruited many elderly party members and retired seniors who love public welfare as volunteer inspectors, jointly managing and supervising river maintenance work.’
Da Tong County Water Affairs Bureau Deputy Director Li Guolin introduced, ‘Through the form of investigation and inspection, they conduct inspections of all rivers and lakes, gullies, and check for problems, and promptly issue notices to relevant townships and units to urge townships to promptly clean up river and lake garbage and to solve problems promptly.’
