China's Green Paradise · Most Oxygenous Sanming: Forest 'Epidemic' Guardians - The Woodpecker
Woodpeckers are a common name for birds of the order Piciformes and the woodpecker family. Different species of woodpeckers vary greatly in size, ranging from 15 to 40+ centimeters. There are 217 woodpecker species worldwide, and 29 of them are found in China. Woodpeckers are forest guardians, in addition to eliminating pests under the bark, their carving marks can serve as indicators for forest logging. They feed on harmful insects such as bark beetles, jewel beetles, moths, and weevils, eating about 1500 of them per day.

Yang'an City currently has a forest land area of 3.67 million mu, with a forest coverage rate of 83.2%, and a timber volume of 23.68 million cubic meters, ranking as one of the 48 key forest counties and cities in southern China and the only forestry reform and development demonstration zone in the country. The preservation of this green land in Yang'an is not only due to the joint care and efforts of forestry workers and the people of the whole city, but also thanks to the contribution of woodpeckers. Currently, 10 species of woodpeckers have been photographed and recorded in Yang'an, including bamboo woodpeckers, yellow-crowned green woodpeckers, and gray-headed green woodpeckers.
