Zhaotong Dashanbao: Thousands of ‘Alpine Spirits’ Black-Necked Cranes Migrate North to Breeding Grounds

March 25th, black-necked cranes 384 were monitored by staff of the Daliangbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve Management Committee, marking the departure of the thousand 'alpine spirits' black-necked crane flocks that have migrated north to their wintering grounds in Daliangbao.

According to the monitoring results of the Daliangbao Black-necked Crane Protection Zone Management Committee, in 2019, the black-necked cranes wintering in Daliangbao reached a peak of 1383. Since mid-March, the weather has been clear and the temperature has risen, triggering the black-necked cranes in Yunnan's northeast to gather in Daliangbao and begin their northward migration back to the reproduction grounds of Yergalai grassland. On the morning of March 25th at 9:00 AM, protection zone staff monitored and counted 384 black-necked cranes, including 317 in Dahazi, 13 in Changhui, 51 in Xiahai, and 3 in Leili, which proves that the Daliangbao black-necked crane fleet has migrated north to their reproduction grounds. In the future, protection zone staff will continue to increase their all-day dynamic monitoring and wild patrols of each night stay location and core area, and at the same time strengthen publicity and education about disease sources and diseases, wild animal protection, and relevant laws and regulations to ensure the safety of the remaining crane flocks leaving Daliangbao.
