Red Net Hourly Hengyang March 27th NewsCorrespondent Wen Lan, Kuang Dayung, Reporter Shi ShanRecently, staff of the Nanyue Hengshan National Nature Reserve Administration discovered the rare crested sunbird while conducting routine animal monitoring and patrol work. This discovery is a new record for the Nanyue area and adds a new member to the reserve's bird catalog.
The crested sunbird is very beautiful, with rich bird colors and melodious singing. The male adult has green feathers on its crown and nape, with a metallic sheen, changing to blue and purple depending on the angle, brilliant and colorful. It has a slender and downward-curved beak, feeding on nectar from flowers with its curved, tubular tongue, resembling a ‘fairy godfather under the moon’, bridging and laying lines to transmit pollen to flowers such as forest mountain cherry blossoms and tea flowers, and is called ‘the eastern hummingbird’.
The photo shows a male crested sunbird, about 11 cm long, often hopping on branches. Also in the frame is a gray-masked cuckoo, the two birds singing together, making the valley lively for a while.
Crested sunbirds have high requirements for the ecological environment, mainly feeding on nectar, which helps to spread pollen, and plays an important role in maintaining the ecological balance of the Nanyue local forest system. In the future, the Nanyue Hengshan National Nature Reserve Administration will continue to increase monitoring and patrol efforts to further understand the distribution and survival status of the crested sunbird, and provide a better living environment for the crested sunbird.
