Wild Macaques in Luzhou's Gilin Built 'Fruit Mountain' for Tourist Viewing
On March 20th, two large flags were erected in the three monkey areas of Baili Village, Guyan County, Luzhou City – one located at the highest point where the monkey group enters and exits, reading 'Baili Monkey Mountain'; and one outside the monkey group's dwelling caves, reading 'King of the Monkeys'. The three monkey areas were named 'Baili Monkey Mountain', a 'Fruit Mountain' was built in the surrounding monkey habitat, and a 'Protection Zone' was created for the monkeys to be viewed by tourists. This is one of the important things that Baili Village will complete in the first half of the year.

The over 100 wild macaques living in Baili Monkey Mountain are the 'star team' of Baili Village.
100+ monkeys family
The three monkey areas of Guyan County, Luzhou City, are famous for their 100+ macaques, equivalent to a family of 100+ people.
In the early years, there were monkey groups roaming here. In recent years, with the increasing awareness of protection by the local government and villagers, the monkey group has gradually developed and grown in scale.
The monkey groups are constantly increasing in number, and to survive, the monkey groups have to forage around for food, and the crops in nearby fields have become their main food source.
The villagers of Baili Village have a 'love-hate' relationship with it. Villager Chen Yingchang said, 'I just planted corn in the soil, and the monkey group secretly came to dig it up when I wasn't there. The soil was full of manure, and they first wiped it clean with their paws before eating it.'
'However, the villagers also know that monkeys are protected animals, and they cannot harm them! Even though they damage crops, it also brings opportunities for the development of the village.' Villager Yan Dengbang said, 'As the monkey group gets larger, it will undoubtedly attract more tourists to visit. With a large number of tourists, the local people can take advantage of the opportunity to sell local specialties and operate farm stays to achieve multiple channels of income.'
After the management of the three monkey groups has been standardized, now the monkey groups can coexist harmoniously with the villagers, and they have also become the 'star team' of Baili Village. They attract thousands of tourists to pay attention every year.
White River will build a wild monkey protection zone
In 2019, the entire Chashui River tourism poverty alleviation highway in Guyan County was fully connected. This highway just passes through the three monkey areas. Convenient transportation conditions have begun to 'materialize' the village's plan to develop tourism industry.
On March 21, 2020, the governments of Baili Township and Baili Village Committee erected two flags in the three monkey areas, marking the formal launch of the Baili Monkey Mountain Tourism Park construction.
Baili Township government staff Luo Yong told reporters, 'Taking advantage of the monkey group to develop tourism is the early planning of the township, but in the past because of poor transportation conditions, it has not been implemented. With the completion of the Chashui River Poverty Alleviation Highway, the village's transportation bottleneck has been broken, and the development of the tourism industry has once again risen to the agenda.'
Baili Village's immediate task is to build good tourism infrastructure in the three monkey areas and demarcate the monkey group's living area. 'Mr. Luo introduced that the tourist base construction is planned to be about 2000 square meters, including a parking lot and a living area; the monkey group's living area is basically in its current state, except for encircling the area where the monkey group's habitat is located to prevent the monkey group from running around, but also to plant vines around the ruins in front of the monkey group's dwelling caves to create a suitable 'Fruit Mountain' for the monkeys to live in.
According to reports, the Luzhou Wild Macaque Protection Zone (Baili Monkey Mountain) is expected to be completed in the first half of this year. At that time, Baili Township will also combine with the nearby Tianmen Lake Canyon Natural Scenery to create a tourism and sightseeing route. At the same time, it will drive the development of local characteristic agricultural industries such as crispy Li plums, grapes and walnuts, which can consolidate the village's poverty alleviation achievements and achieve the goal of rural tourism combined with rural revitalization.
