Shaoguan Xixing: Red Deer Enters Villager's Home, Villagers Call Police and Release

On April 5th, a wild animal entered a villager's home in Maotxin Township, Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province. After the villager discovered it, he immediately called the police. Upon receiving the report, local police station and the jurisdiction of the Public Security Forest Branch Police immediately rushed to the scene, discovering that the wild animal was suspected to be an adult red deer (known as Huang Chou in Shaoxing locally), weighing about 20 jin, and entered the villager's home independently, with no obvious injuries, and in good condition.
A Red Deer Misunderstanding in a Villager's Home
Subsequently, staff transported this red deer that had mistakenly entered a villager's home to a nearby forest farm for release. At the release site, the red deer appeared particularly restless, with the bag-like rope not fully opened, and it began to scramble. When staff loosened the rope, the red deer quickly jumped into the nearby forest, disappearing rapidly in the dense jungle.
It is understood that red deer is the largest species in the deer family. Adult red deer have a body length of about 1 meter, a tail length of 17 to 21 cm, and a weight of 25 to 30 kilograms. They generally move independently, with a cautious habit, mostly feeding at night or in the early morning and evening, and hiding in shrubs during the day. They emit very loud calls similar to dogs when startled.
Staff said that the activity range of red deer is generally fixed, and when chased, they will return to their original activity area no matter how far they run. They mainly live in low-altitude mountain areas, hills and forests, shrubs and feed on tender branches, leaves, flowers, fruits and crops. They are listed in the 'National List of Beneficial or of Important Economic, Scientific Research Value Terrestrial Wild Animals' issued by China in 2000.
Shaoxing County is located in the Guangdong-Guangxi border area, with a forest coverage rate exceeding 77%, ranking among the top in the province. The abundant forest resources have nurtured the rich species resources of Shaoxing, and the Chaoholing National Nature Reserve is known as 'a treasure trove of species, the South China Pearl' due to its rich flora and fauna.
Shaoxing County's relevant officials said that recently, the local government has attached great importance to the protection of wild plants and animals, and has organized various types of wild plant and animal protection publicity activities, and organized various special inspections and joint law enforcement inspections. The rapid reporting after the red deer entered a villager's home was a reflection of the increasing awareness of the local people to protect wild plants and animals.
