Two New Mammalian Species Discovered in Huangshan, Anhui
Guangming Daily Hefei March 4th (Reporter Changhe)Chinese researchers discovered two new mammalian species in the Floating Monkey Valley of Huangshan Scenic Area in Anhui Province. After comprehensive morphological and phylogenetic analysis, they were confirmed to be species belonging to the Eugleyinae. Currently, they have been named 'Anhui Eugley' and 'Huangshan Little Eugley'.

Reporter learned that this research result is a cooperation project undertaken by the Huangshan Scenic Area Management Committee and the Nanjing Environment Science Institute of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of Anhui Province and Anhui University – 'Huangshan Scenic Area Wild Animal Observation Cooperation Project' . The research results have been published in the English version of 'Animal Systematics' of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Animal Institute in the fourth issue of 2019 and the first issue of 2020.
Researchers introduced that Eugley is a Eurasian insectivorous animal of the Eugleyinae. The genus is distributed in Asia, Europe and Africa, most species are concentrated in tropical and subtropical regions, living in forests, plains, hills and mountains, mainly eating soil insects, and also eating flowers, fruits and seeds of plants. Eugley resembles a rat, with body types including large, medium and small types. The two new species discovered in Huangshan Scenic Area all belong to medium-sized Eugley. Researchers believe that the discovery of two new species of Anhui Eugley and Huangshan Little Eugley further enriches the mammalian biodiversity of Huangshan Scenic Area, especially the order Carnivora, and fills the gap in the research of Eugleyinae in the scenic area.
It is introduced that Anhui Eugley has small round ears, the back fur is dark brown to black, the abdomen is lighter than the back, the tail is similar in color to the fur, the tail is only 76% of the length of the head and body, the tail is almost half exposed, with a small amount of short stiff hair, close to the tail fur gradually shortens, the tip of the tail has a tuft of bristly hair; four limbs are half exposed, pink, with sparse short hairs at the ankle; the skull is long and narrow, the first pair of frontal teeth is developed, the arch is obvious. Huangshan Little Eugley has a short nose, whiskers reach the bottom of the ear, small round ears, the ear shell has obvious base hair, the fur is grayish-brown, the back is slightly black; the four limbs are slender, five-toed, with small and fleshy bumps on the feet, the foot pads are pink, half exposed, the ankle has sparse brown hair; the tail is about 76% of the length of the head and body, similar in color to the fur, almost bare, with a very small amount of long stiff hair; the skull is long and flat, without zygomatic arch, the first pair of frontal teeth is curved and developed, the arch is obvious.
