China News Agency, Lanzhou, March 22 (Qiu Liang, Wang Hai) – The Gansu Dunhuang Municipal Publicity Bureau disclosed on March 22 that recently, researchers at the Dunhuang West Lake National Nature Reserve discovered that, in early March, a large group of wild camels had passed through the area captured by infrared cameras within the reserve. This is the largest number of wild camels recorded since the reserve was established.
The footage shows that these wild camels are in excellent condition, with bright coats, and there were approximately 35 peaks (referring to the humps). Additionally, researchers for the first time detected photos and videos of the state-protected species, the desert cat.

At other locations within the reserve, the infrared cameras also captured photos and videos of golden eagles, houbara bustards, lynx, fennec foxes, hedgehogs, and other wild animals.
This monitoring data collection provides the West Lake Reserve Administration with comprehensive information to implement strict prohibition measures and strengthen the control of wild animals. It also provides a scientific basis for the rescue and protection of rare and endangered wild animals, as well as biodiversity research.

The Gansu Dunhuang West Lake National Nature Reserve is located at the western end of the Hexi Corridor, along the eastern edge of the Kumtag Desert, between the East Altai Mountains and the North Mountains. It covers a total area of 660,000 hectares and is a typical inland wetland ecosystem, desert ecosystem, and desert wild flora and fauna protection combined natural reserve, and is an important 'habitat' for Przewalski's horses and wild camels.
