A Group of 'Rare Guests' Has Arrived at Baihua Lake – They Don't Want to Leave...

Grey gulls, white herons, black herons, wild ducks, dabbling ducks… and many other unidentified birds have been gathering in the vicinity of Baihua Lake in Guiyang City in recent times. It is reported that these birds were not common in Baihua Lake in the past, but have been increasing in number recently.

According to Ai Yonghua, enforcement personnel of the Baihua Lake Management Office of the Guiyang Municipal Water Affairs Bureau (Two Lakes and One Reservoir Administration), 'Baihua Lake Management Office continuously strengthens the water quality supervision of Baihua Lake's water sources, closely controls pollution sources around surrounding enterprises and township and village residents' production and living sewage discharge, ensuring that the water quality of Baihua Lake's drinking water source is continuously improving.'
The Baihua Lake Management Office has been conducting five major crackdowns: cracking down on illegal discharge, illegal buildings, illegal fishing, illegal water extraction, and destruction of forest resources – all illegal behaviors; it also carries out water surface law enforcement patrols, joint enforcement, and persuades and stops personnel from entering level one drinking water protection zones and other designated areas for recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, camping, and barbecuing; it also strengthens daily cleaning, promptly removes and clears garbage from the lake and lake shore… This is their daily work. The work is busy and the tasks are arduous.

'We have to conduct at least twice water surface law enforcement patrols every day. The number of waterbirds has increased, which means our work is constantly improving. The arrival of these 'rare guests' is a testament to our achievements.' Ai Yonghua said.
The reporter saw many flocks of grey gulls, white herons, black herons, egrets, wild ducks, dabbling ducks in the lake and on the shore. Some were flying over the water, some were resting on the meadows, some were foraging by the lake, and some were standing in a line on the rocks like sentries.

These birds range in size from large to small; from color, there are black, white, grey, and mottled colors. The population and number are increasing more and more, to the point of being unable to count.
Currently, the overall water quality of the Baihua Lake reservoir area is good, and the water quality of Baihua Lake is stable at Class III.
