Over 3,000-meter-high mountains and hills are a brilliant gem in the southern part of the Cloud Mountains, in Yunnan Province. Their beauty lies not only in the azure sky, the clear blue lakes, and the vast grasslands, but also in the fact that it is a haven for the endangered black-necked crane.

It is the largest black-necked crane wintering protection area in China. Here there are azure skies, clear blue lakes, vast grasslands, and rare endangered species of black-necked cranes wintering here.

Black-necked cranes, also known as 'goose geese' or 'Tibet cranes', were first discovered by Polish naturalist Pulexvarius at Lake Qinghai in 1876. Of the 15 crane species worldwide, 9 are found in China, and black-necked cranes are the largest flying, rare, and endangered avian species native to China, and are listed as a national level protected wild animal and are listed as one of the world's most urgently needed endangered species. Black-necked cranes are a precious natural heritage given to humanity, and are a world-famous important cultural bird.

Currently, there are about 8,000 black-necked cranes worldwide, with over 4,000 in China. The black-necked crane population in Madangbao in 2009 reached over 1,200.

'Nine Nine Comes, Three Three Goes' – Every nine ninth of the lunar calendar, black-necked cranes come from afar like clockwork. They flap their wings gracefully, displaying their beautiful dance, flying freely in the azure sky, singing and dancing in the beautiful lake shore, and enjoying a leisurely life. Therefore, from December to March of the following year, is the best time to watch black-necked cranes in Madangbao.

A wetland observation site

In 2011, Madangbao was awarded the title of 'China's Most Beautiful Wetlands'. The other observation site in Madangbao, the Black-necked Crane Research Base in Yunnan Province, is also a famous observation site for birds. Here is the most numerous black-necked crane, the best observation angle, and the closest shooting distance. The best birding period is from February 20th to March 15th.
Clouds and Mist, Starry Skies

Another magical thing about Madangbao is the changeable mist. During the day, you can see cloud mist, and you can see them rolling and moving, and you can see the 'Buddha light' phenomenon when they shift lightly. If you're lucky, you can also see the light and mist change into 'Buddha light'.
On the slopes of Gongzi Mountain, the best place to appreciate the majesty of the gorge and the surging clouds is to reach the summit. It's interesting to wait for sudden heavy mist. One second, the mist is still several hundred meters deep in the valley, the next gust of wind causes these heavy clouds to roll up, and then they come towards the trail and the summit in various forms. The next second, the surrounding area suddenly turns into a misty state, leaving you unprepared. The next second, the summit is still sunny, but in the high-altitude shaded area, the branches and meadows are still covered with long icicles, and one side is sunlight, the other side is white snow, a contrast between the two!
