Malayan Jumping Spider
Phaeacius malayensis
Arthropods, Class Insecta, Order Araneae, Family Salticidae. Commonly found on tree trunks, walls, feeding on mosquitoes, flies and other small insects. Mainly distributed in Yunnan in China, and also distributed in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, etc. Photo taken in Xishuangbanna
Their carapace is brown, densely covered with gray hairs, the outer edge is dark brown, nearly circular, with eight eyes, of which the two eyes in the middle are the largest, which is one of the most distinctive features of the Salticidae family
Unlike the Archer spider that 'waits for rabbits' by weaving nets, the Malayan Jumping Spider is a hunting spider. It has one of the few 'good eyesight' in the animal kingdom, able to roughly see the outline of the prey or enemy. Their bristles on their legs can help them judge whether it's a prey or an enemy, and then make a decision to hunt or flee
Although the Malayan Jumping Spider is a hunting spider, like other web-weaving spiders, it has a 'spinneret' at the end of its abdomen, used to weave a thin layer of web near its nest to enhance sensory function. It will also weave a layer of web when molting to increase the success rate of molting
When the Malayan Jumping Spider hunts at high places and reaches the end of the wall or branch, it will jump to another place. At this time, it will pull out a silk thread and attach it to the high place to mitigate the potential harm caused by a dive. The effect is similar to a stunt actor's safety rope tied around his waist. In addition, the male Malayan Jumping Spiders will weave a mating net during the mating season to store sperm
