Breed History
In the early 19th century, Australian ranchers sought to find a breed that could help local ranchers work. They imported a pair of gray-blue Scottish Highland Cattle Dogs. This breed worked well but barked poorly and lacked leadership. To solve this problem, breeders used crossbreeding with different breeds, such as the blood of Australian wild dogs, to make them stronger and quieter; adding the strong Smithfield feeder breed to improve their appearance; and adding Kelpie dogs, Dumbletown dogs, Australian Colby dogs, and British ancient sheepdogs. The resulting hybrid breed was a significant improvement over previous working dogs and gradually gained recognition from ranchers, and was named Australian Cattle Dog. Locals also called it Blue Heelers.

Overall Evaluation
Australian Cattle Dogs have strong, solid, powerful, proportionate, and muscular characteristics, giving them an impression of agility, flexibility, and resilience. They are strong, versatile working dogs. They have a high IQ and are willing to take on difficult work assigned by their owners. The dog is energetic, has good stamina, and is a valuable assistant to ranchers. Because the Australian Cattle Dog mainly undertakes long-distance guidance of cattle herds in inland Australia, it is very adaptable to the remote and wild environment.
