Whooper Swans Return to Dianchi Wetlands After 3 Years

Recently, members of the Yunnan Wild Birds Association photographed one White Stork in the Dongdaha Wetland area of Jinning District, Kunming City. This is the first time a flock of 10 White Storks has been found in the Dongdaha Wetland area since January 21, 2017, and it is the first time the White Stork has appeared in this area in 3 years.
According to reports, the White Stork is a national level two protected animal. Because it was not observed in China for many consecutive years, the China Red Book on Endangered Animals once announced that the White Stork had disappeared from China. Its number is even less than that of the national level one protected animal, the White Crane. Due to the reduction of habitat and environmental pollution, it is now on the verge of extinction.
In recent years, the management of Dianchi Lake has achieved good results, providing a good habitat and sufficient food sources for wild birds. More and more wild birds have begun to frequently visit Dianchi Lake and surrounding wetlands. (Yunnan Daily reporter Zhang Yanqun, correspondent Li Jixing)
