After the Closure of the Aquarium, Penguins from Antarctica and Whales from the Arctic Have Their First Meeting
Do you remember the penguins at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois? After the COVID-19 pandemic closed it, the little penguins were released to tour the entire building.
Their ongoing tours are continuing, and the Shedd Aquarium is sharing their experiences on social media. The penguins have stolen hearts as they explore their home, and recently they even encountered their neighbors, the beluga whales.
The whales were completely captivated by the penguins, walking straight up to the glass to meet the little guys.
The beluga whale, Wellington, was particularly fascinated with several freshwater fish, including the red pufferfish and the silverstripe danio. These fish also seemed interested in Wellington, meaning the penguins weren't the only animals gaining enriching experiences from these temporary tours.
'Although the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago may be closed to the public, animal care staff and veterinarians are on call around the clock,' a spokesperson for the aquarium said. 'Without guests, the keepers have become increasingly creative in enriching the animals' lives – introducing new experiences, activities, food, etc. to keep them stimulated, encourage exploration, problem-solving, and natural behaviors.'
The Shedd Aquarium has also been educating its fans about penguins through its posts, revealing that the popular Wellington is 32 years old, twice the lifespan of a Rockhopper penguin.
