Crocodile Suffocating Due to Tire Around Neck, Indonesian Government Offers Reward for Removal

Indonesian crocodile trapped by tire, struggling to breathe

Overseas Net, February 2nd reportRecently, the Indonesian Wild Animal Protection Management Department issued a bounty, hoping that brave individuals would step forward to remove the tire wrapped around the crocodile's neck and ensure its safe survival. If successful, the person would receive a substantial bonus, but the amount is undisclosed.

According to the Malaysian media ‘China Daily’ report on January 31st, this 4-meter-long, critically endangered Siamese crocodile was spotted in the rivers of Palu region, South Sulawesi, in 2016. It was then trapped by a tire.

In 2018, locals filmed the crocodile, which surfaced with water and gasped for air. At that time, under the coordination of the Central Sulawesi Natural Resource Protection Agency, volunteers attempted to lure the crocodile to land using chickens as bait, but it showed no interest.

Now, the crocodile has grown to 4 meters long, with a head measuring 40 centimeters. The tire is preventing it from breathing.

Over the years, local departments have tried, but failed. After the latest sighting of the crocodile, the South Sulawesi Provincial Government coordinated relevant departments to summarize the unsuccessful rescue methods in recent years. However, the agency has not provided details about the bonus and has not revealed how external individuals should complete the task.

The head of the Indonesian Wild Animal Protection Department said he was not calling on amateur enthusiasts to hunt the crocodile, but on people with a background in wildlife rescue who longed to protect the animal.
