The Sunrises, Sunsets, and Cloud Seas of Catershan Peak – A Rare Natural Wonder

Catershan, also known as Nanhua Zhi Tian (the Top of Guangxi), is the highest peak in Guangxi Province and the foremost peak among the Five Ridges. It boasts towering mountains, dense forests, and experiences cool summers and snowy winters, offering an elegant environment and picturesque scenery, combining majestic, perilous, secluded, and splendid natural landscapes.

The vertical height difference between the summit of Catershan and its base is 1861.5 meters. The mountain is massive, with numerous peaks rising and falling, standing majestic and imposing, with a grand atmosphere, shaped by millions of years of natural weathering. On the mountain, there are numerous rocky peaks, cliffs, and precipices, with landscapes of odd peaks, cliffs, and giant rocks.

Caution: People with a fear of heights should not visit this viewing point. Can you see the steep and narrow stone steps?

Catershan's unique mountainous environment and climatic conditions have formed many vibrant meteorological phenomena. Its sunrises, sunsets, cloud seas, light rains, and snow all have significant scenic value. The weather on the mountain changes constantly, transforming and mysterious, with mist often lingering in the valleys, and winds and clouds swirling, creating a myriad of meteorological phenomena. Of course, the fierce winds on the mountain are also worth mentioning. That feeling is truly unforgettable, and I wonder if other friends have the same feeling?

During the foggy spring and autumn seasons, when the sunlight shines at a particular angle, the 'Buddha Light' phenomenon often appears in the Buddha Peak area, with seven-colored auspicious light and colorful rings, creating a dreamlike illusion. Some say that seeing 'Buddha Light' is good luck. Therefore, on that afternoon, I and Ian patiently waited at the 'Buddha Light' viewing platform, and not only did we see it, but we also captured it before the sunset.

Its formation requires strict natural conditions, such as clear weather, a specific angle of sunlight, unique terrain, cloud seas or mist, and the observer's specific location. Otherwise, it is difficult to form 'Buddha Light'.

This is the 'Buddha Light' viewing platform, and capturing it is considered a blessing from the heavens.

Looking across from the 'Buddha Light' viewing platform, in the distance is the main peak of Catershan, and nearby is the Catershan Power Station.

Many campers and overnight visitors to Catershan want to capture sunrises and sunsets at the top of Guangxi's highest peak, but whether they encounter good weather depends on personal luck. Some people start climbing to the summit as early as four or five in the morning to wait for the sunrise, but the weather on the mountain is constantly changing, and cloud seas or sunrises are truly rare.

As early as the elders told us, 'One mountain has four seasons, and ten miles have different skies.' You probably only understand this if you've been to Guangxi's highest peak. To be honest, Catershan, if you just stand at the foot of Catershan, you won't even know which peak is the real Catershan.

However, every year from April to June, the azaleas in Catershan National Nature Reserve bloom in droves, creating a vibrant and dazzling flowering season. Catershan, which boasts the most diverse and colorful azaleas in Guangxi, blooms across the entire protected area, forming 'The Azalea World, The Ocean of Flowers,' creating a unique and brilliant landscape for Catershan.

We look forward to the spring flowers blooming again next year, and to once again appreciate the flower sea and sunrise at Guangxi’s highest peak.
