Gulls are medium to large terrestrial birds, the largest standing up to 1 m tall and weighing up to 10 kg. The body is stout and tapers posteriorly. The head is flat and broad, the neck is long, with 16–18 cervical vertebrae. Flight is powerful and sustained, with gliding only during descent. There are 10 primary flight feathers and 16–24 secondary flight feathers. The tail is broad, short to medium in length, with a square or slightly rounded tip, and 18–20 tail feathers.
