Lightsan Ecological Beauty: Giant Salamander Visits
On March 17th, at 3:00 PM, a huge salamander entered Longshan Lake National Wetland Park in Guangshan County, enjoying a wonderful spring, and was unexpectedly discovered by two villagers who promptly reported it to the county's Public Security Bureau.
The scientific name for the salamander is Chinese giant salamander, a precious and rare wild animal native to China. In 1988, the ‘Wildlife Protection Law of the People’s Republic of China’ listed it as a secondary key protected wild animal in China, and it is one of China’s treasures. Salamanders have extremely high requirements for their living environment, generally found in fast-flowing water, cool water quality, abundant aquatic plants, and mountainous streams, rivers, and lakes with many gaps and caves in rocks, and sometimes also move on land.
Guangshan County is a national key ecological functional area, a Chinese ecological charm county, and a Chinese natural oxygen county. The county implements ecological civilization construction, practices ‘green water and mountains are gold and silver mountains’, and launched the ‘River Development’ strategy with ‘one river, two reservoirs, and three gardens’ as an ecological comprehensive governance carrier, continuing to promote ecological governance in the whole county, accumulating 20 billion cubic meters of water resources, the county’s forest coverage rate reaches 45.85%, and from 2017 to 2019, the greening index data is at the provincial and municipal level, and the air quality excellent days are often the first in Henan Province’s county-level cities.
Longshan Lake wetland park has a wide and flat lake surface with an area of over 20,000 acres. The lake is surrounded by towering peaks and mountains, with dense trees. The good ecological environment has become an ideal breeding paradise for wild animals and plants. The salamander mainly grows in the mountainous streams, rivers and tributaries of the Yangtze River, Yellow River and Pearl River, so its appearance in Longshan Lake National Wetland Park fully demonstrates the excellent ecological environment and water quality of Longshan Lake wetland park.
Upon hearing the news, the arriving police officers measured the salamander, which was more than 1 meter long and weighed more than 10 jin. The police found a large water tank nearby to protect it, and subsequently contacted relevant departments to follow the suggested advice and released it back into Longshan Lake National Wetland Park to return to nature.
