Recently, scientific researchers from the Dunhuang West Lake National Nature Reserve Administration discovered a large group of wild camels while collecting and monitoring data on March 4th at the Shi-hu-luo and Tianqiao Duni area. The infrared camera recorded a video and photos of the camels passing through. From the footage, it can be seen that the camels have robust bodies and shiny fur, with approximately 35 peaks, which is the most individual camel group record since the establishment of the reserve.

From the red infrared camera monitoring in the reserve, researchers also discovered photos and videos of the national second-level protected animal, Desert Cat, in the northern Shuqu River area near Yushuquan, marking the first time. The Desert Cat is the only cat species native to China, currently listed as an endangered species by the World Natural Heritage Organization. At other monitoring points, the infrared camera also captured Golden Eagles, Goose-throated Teal, Lynx, Fennec Fox, Hedgehog, and other wild animals.

This monitoring data collection provides comprehensive data for the West Lake Administration to take strict restrictions and strengthen the management of wild animals. It also provides a scientific basis for the rescue and protection of rare and endangered wild animals and biodiversity research.
The Dunhuang West Lake National Nature Reserve is located at the western end of the Hexi Corridor, along the eastern edge of the Kumtag Desert, between the Altai Mountains and North Mountain, with a total area of 660,000 hectares. It is a typical inland wetland ecosystem, desert ecosystem, and desert wild plant ecosystem for the protection of the nature reserve, which is also a ‘home’ for Przewalski’s horses and wild camels.
