Critically Endangered Black-necked Storks Visit Gaodaha River Valley
Recently, a group of black-necked white-bodied birds has settled in Gaodaha River Valley, Tonghai County, attracting the attention of local villagers. According to eyewitnesses, this group of birds consists of hundreds of individuals, they have been in Gaodaha River Valley for nearly a month. During the day, they forage or play in fields and rivers, and at night they roost in the dense forests, coexisting peacefully with local residents.

It is reported that this bird species is scientifically known as 'sandhill crane', belongs to the crane family, is a national second-level key protected animal, and has been listed in the 'International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)' 2013 Red List of Endangered Species as a low-risk species. The sandhill crane has a wingspan of up to 81 cm when its wings are fully extended, with plumage white to gray, gray-tinged gray in the winter, and a sunken lower beak, with a clear gap when the beak is closed. They forage for soft-bodied animals in wetlands and coastal mudflats. The sandhill crane was first recorded in the West Lake of Dali, Yunnan in October 3, 2006, and its population is distributed in India and Southeast Asia.

Sandhill cranes mainly inhabit tropical wetlands and have high requirements for their habitat. In recent years, the Tonghai County Party Committee and County Government have continuously increased their efforts to protect the environment and raise awareness, and the ecological environment has become increasingly good. The wild bird species in Gaodaha River Valley and surrounding areas have also increased, currently reaching dozens of species.
