Rescuing a Gray Crane at the Lancang River Source Area of the Three Rivers Source National Park
Recently, during their daily patrol activities, ecological guardians such as Guba Bai Ma from Zaqing's Deqing Township discovered a state-protected gray crane by the riverbank of Deqing Township's One Society. They immediately contacted the Mazado County Forest Public Security Bureau. After observation, the gray crane was in good physical condition, suspected of being stranded during its migration, to prevent it from endangering its life safety, the ecological guardians brought it home to feed it, and subsequently released it near the ecological guardians' home in Deqing Township.
According to reports, gray cranes belong to state-protected second-level wild animals, often inhabiting open plains, grasslands, swamps, riverbanks, wilderness, and lakes. They particularly favor open lakes and swamps with abundant water-side plants, and have a wide distribution within the Three Rivers Source National Park. Gray crane breeding grounds span the Eurasian continent, and typically begin their migration to breeding grounds in mid-to-late March, and their autumn migration from gray cranes breeding in Xinjiang and Qinghai to southern India in September-October. During migration, they often form small groups of several families, sometimes 40-50 individuals. The breeding period is 4-7 months.
Currently, the Mazado County Forest Public Security Bureau is conducting a special work operation within the Lancang River Source Park and Nature Reserve, in accordance with the instructions from the higher authorities, to ensure the safety of bird and other wild animals' habitats and natural resources during the migration period and to crack down on wildlife crime.
