Baer's Sparrow

The Baer's Sparrow is a national level protected animal with a large plumage in copper-brown, a long and downward-curved beak, and a beautiful form, with high recognition. According to records, there have been no Baer's Sparrows observed in China for the past 70 years. In the 1998 edition of 'China's Endangered Animals Red Book', the World Natural Protection Alliance announced that the Baer's Sparrow was extinct in China.

In 2012, the Baer's Sparrow was first recorded in Yunnan Province, and subsequent sightings have been numerous, mostly consisting of solitary birds or small populations. This time, 21 Baer's Sparrows were detected in Jiangchuan District, which is the largest group ever recorded.
In recent years, Jiangchuan District has vigorously promoted the restoration of the Yunlong Lake ecological system and the construction of the wetland riparian zone. The national wetland, where the critically endangered Baer's Sparrow lives among various aquatic plants and small fish and shrimp, is very suitable for the Baer's Sparrow to forage and inhabit. The arrival of the Baer's Sparrow has added some vitality to the Yunlong Lake in the early spring, and is also a witness to Jiangchuan's ecological construction, wetland protection and restoration, and biodiversity protection work.
