Interesting Bird Names

Share some interesting birds with easy-to-remember names, composed of verbs + nouns, describing their appearance characteristics. Let's start to recognize them from the beginning.

Since we're starting from the beginning, the first to appear is the Das Redhead ()

Das Redhead (), photographed in Huhui on 20200314, forgot where it was on which tree, anyway not on a mulberry tree. Das Redhead ()

Das Redhead () belongs to the Das Redhead family () in the Das Redhead genus. It's a rare species under this family, comparable to the silver fir () in plants. Although it has a wide distribution (), it's common in most places in China. In the north, it's a summer migrant bird (, meaning it flies to the south for winter). In the south, it's a resident bird (). Perhaps because of its commonness, Das Redhead has become a seasonal weather indicator. In Grain Rain, there are 'one waits for the emergence of reed shoots; two waits for the Eurasian Jay to clean its feathers; three waits for the Das Redhead to descend on a mulberry tree.' The third wait refers to seeing the Das Redhead on a mulberry tree.Photographed in Lhasa, Roblinka on 20180617. The next second, it's 'duelling' with a tree. It can't be explained that you are a woodpecker.

'Redhead' refers to the ancient women's headdress. Das Redhead is named because it has a crest feather on its head. Although it's common, I first saw Das Redhead in Roblinka, Lhasa. In fact, it's easily found in many parks in Shanghai. I haven't seen it pecking on the grass yet, I've seen it on trees, and Das Redhead, which often has a long beak, is quite different from a woodpecker.

The next to appear is the Yellow-crowned ()

Das Redhead ()The Yellow-crowned () belongs to the Das Redhead family () in the Das Redhead genus. Compared to the Das Redhead, the Yellow-crowned is really tiny and cute, it has always been on my list of bird species to see, luckily, I added it a week ago. The name of the Yellow-crowned is because of the yellow crest feather on its head. Besides being small and active, and as a winter migrant () in the south, it doesn't attract much attention. Interestingly, it's also picky about its habitat. When migrating south, it likes to stay on pine trees. I found one by a row of Chinese cypresses.Painted Waxbill, photographed in Jiangxi Shangrao on 20181212. I also encountered it in some previous bird watching records.

After wearing the crest, it should be...

Painted Waxbill ()

The Painted Waxbill belongs to the Painted Waxbill family () now also called the Waxbill family. As a traditionally caged bird (, also illegal), many people should have heard of it. It's named because of the white rim around its eyes that extends backward like a brow. It's widely distributed in southern forests. I've seen it stably existing in a small mountain in my hometown for two consecutive years. I've also recorded it once in a park in Shanghai. A birdwatcher friend said it's an escaped bird (or released).Painted Waxbill () photographed in Shanghai on 20181104.
