Tongyi Garden was built during the boom of themed cultural tourism projects in the 1990s, such as Tang City, Three Kingdoms City, and Water Margin City. Later, the resort shifted its focus to two-shore folk exchanges, introducing the culture of Mazu (Goddess Mazu), trying to develop tourism by creating two-shore cultures.
Afterwards, Tongyi Garden hoped to focus on the theme of the reunification of the country, attracting student traffic, and once became a patriotic education base. In addition to cooperation with travel agencies, it was once bustling and lively.
However, due to the excessively low ticket prices, the actual profit was very meager. Tongyi Garden eventually failed to operate and closed down.

Because of long-term inability to pay debts, Tongyi Garden was forcibly auctioned in January 2006 at a reference price of 140 million yuan by the court. Even the 'super low price' didn't attract any bids. Unexpectedly, more than ten years later, history repeated itself: From October 31 to November 1, 2018, an auction with a starting bid of over 300 million yuan was held on Alibaba's auction platform, featuring Tongyi Garden, a former popular themed park in Wuxi, Ta Hu Zhi Bin (Near the Lake). Because there were no bidders, it was declared a failed auction.
