Northern Tourists Stunned by a Unique Food in Wanjangxi Alley: Chengdu People Are Too Good at Eating

This is Xiao Yu's travel diary, wandering around and taking it slow, let's explore the world together.

When it comes to famous food cities in China, Chengdu is definitely a top choice. The charm of Sichuan cuisine has spread throughout the country, surpassing Asia, and even shows a momentum of sweeping the globe. As the capital of Sichuan, Chengdu is among the most attractive tourist cities domestically, and the factor of featured food should account for a large part. Do you think Chengdu is only about 'spicy and hot' food? When you visit Chengdu, many people come with a mindset of shopping and eating, naturally. As you walk through various attractions, the pace of your travel unconsciously slows down. Besides several famous spots, what's most suitable to feel the Chengdu vibes might be some pedestrian streets.

Almost every tourist city has a famous commercial pedestrian street, but few cities like Chengdu have several of them, such as Spring City, Jinan Alley, and Wanjangxi Alley, all are renowned. It's truly a 'leisurely city'!

Although all these are commercial pedestrian streets, Spring City, Jinan Alley, and Wanjangxi Alley still have some differences. For example, Spring City is more modern, while Jinan Alley and Wuhou Temple are adjacent, and the night view is more famous.

Today, I want to focus on introducing Wanjangxi Alley. Before visiting this commercial pedestrian street, I thought it was like Spring City, a completely modern building. In fact, Wanjangxi Alley also has a story – it was once the site of the Qing Dynasty's 'Man City'.

During the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty, after suppressing the Zugu Er Rebellion, the Qing government left more than 1,000 garrison troops to guard Chengdu, and they built a 'Man City' for these Manchurian and Mongolian Eight Banners 'nobles'. In those days, Man City was a very large area, with 50 streets and alleys, now only Wanjangxi Alley, Jinan Alley, and Jingxiang Alley remain, which is now Wanjangxi Alley scenic area.

It's worth mentioning that the former 'Man City' had walls around it, ordinary people couldn't enter. Now it has become one of Chengdu's most famous tourist attractions, attracting millions of visitors every year.

Now, you can still see some historical sites in Wanjangxi Alley. For example, Kalu Old Mansion, Zhang Caiqin's Residence, Qing Dynasty Horse Stall, and Qing Dynasty Wells. However, they are no longer 'the main characters', people come here primarily to feel the leisure atmosphere of Chengdu. This concentrates Chengdu's various foods and snacks, while retaining Chengdu's leisure activities, even if you don't buy anything, just taking a walk and browsing, you'll still feel very comfortable. After all, taking it slow and stopping along the way is the best way to travel.

Among the many characteristic foods sold in Wanjangxi Alley, I discovered a 'creative snack' – a scallion stuck in a pig's nose. As a Northern tourist, I really saw it for the first time eating pig's nose, and this funny form made me a little stunned,

The boss told me it was braised pork, with a chewy texture. Putting a scallion in it is to attract tourists' attention, because this scene looks quite interesting and eye-catching.

I stood in front of the pig's nose for a while, and I saw many tourists passing by to take pictures. I thought about it for a long time, and I still didn't dare to try this 'featured food', but I sincerely admire the creativity of Chengdu people about food.

So, have you ever been to Chengdu? Have you been to Wanjangxi Alley when you visit Chengdu? Have you ever seen this pig's nose with a scallion creative food? If it's you, would you like to try it?
