In Yunnan, a Place – ‘One Person, One Thing, One Scene’ – Brings Local Tourism to Life
Yuxi's name origin
Yuxi, a county-level city under Yunnan Province, is located in central Yunnan. It borders the provincial capital of Kunming to the north, connects with Pu'er to the southwest, and borders Honghe Hauni Autonomous Prefecture to the southeast and Xucheng Autonomous Prefecture to the northwest. Yuxi is known as the hometown of ( Er), 'Smoke of Mist,' 'Lantern Town,' and 'Highland Water Towns,' located in the (fu di – mid-belly) of Dianzhong (Yunnan Central Plain), and is a key transportation hub connecting with foreign and Southeast Asian regions. Yuxi was relatively well-known in the province, but most people still associate it with Yuxi Cigarettes, and some even believe the name Yuxi originated from the cigarettes.

Regarding the origin of Yuxi’s name, the archives of Yunnan Province contain clear records in the ‘Case of Altered County Names under the False Civil Affairs Office’ case file. The two characters ‘Yuxi’ in the former Yuxi County were derived from the Yuxi River, which encircled the area like a jade ribbon, thus the county was named Yuxi. In 1950, the Yuxi Executive Office (formerly the Dianzhong People’s Administrative Office) and the Yuxi People’s Government were established. At that time, Yuxi was still only a county, and in 1997, the State abolished the Yuxi Region and established the county-level Yuxi City. The original county-level city of Yuxi was then transformed into today’s Hongta District. Therefore, the origin of Yuxi is not due to cigarettes but the Red Tower Group's cigarettes that used the name Yuxi. Red Tower Mountain

Fuxian Lake
Many years ago, when local people discovered something surprising while diving in Fuxian Lake, it added to the mystery of the lake. Local people discovered a large number of artificial structures and ruins at the bottom of the lake. The scale of these ruins was astonishing. The question arose: did this place really have the legendary underwater ancient city? If so, what kind of city was it, and how did it sink into the lake? Subsequently, the Chinese Underwater Archaeological Team stationed itself in Fuxian Lake. Through further exploration, they discovered an ancient architectural complex consisting of 8 buildings, of which the most eye-catching is a building about 20 meters high, resembling a golden pyramid. The other buildings include a base 63 meters wide and 21 meters high, resembling the Roman Colosseum, and a 300-meter-long, 7-meter-wide stone road with intricate carvings. The other buildings were likely sites for sacrificial activities. However, the reason why the ancient city sank into the lake remains unknown. The beautiful scenery combined with the mysterious underwater ancient city has made Fuxian Lake’s fame spread far and wide, and now Fuxian Lake’s tourism industry is very thriving.
