Visiting Huilontan Park in Shanghai, Following Movie Scenes, and Reliving Stephen Chow’s ‘Kung Fu Hustle’

Yesterday went for a walk and happened to pass by the Huilontan Park in Jiaxing District. After exploring, I discovered thatThis place is one of the filming locations for Stephen Chow's classic comedy movie 'Kung Fu Hustle'

As the park hasn't fully reopened for visitors yet, I specifically came to visit after it opened today. Let's first introduce this park.

Huilontan Park is located in a very down-to-earth location, surrounded by ordinary residential communities, it's a popular spot for locals to take their children for a walk and play. It's small and compact, and you can explore it in about an hour. It has a history of over 400 years, and there are many cultural and historical relics within the park, including stone pavilions, stone towers, and stone peaks dating back to the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, with eleven ancient trees over 100 years old.

The movie was released in July 1993, so the filming time should be between 1992 and 1993. After repeatedly watching the movie, I confirmed that the crew filmed three classic and hilarious scenes in Huilontan Park:

The scene of the Four Great Scholars appearing together, Tang Bohu and Hua Lian's 'battle' on the bridge, and Tang Bohu's first encounter with Autumn Fragrance on the street.Let's now follow the movie's scenes to experience them in reality.

First is the scene of the Four Great Scholars appearing together.

This scene was filmed on the bridge in front of the west gate of Huilontan Park, facing the Kong Miao three archways, specifically the 'Xing Xian' archway.

From the west gate of Huilontan Park to the 'Xing Xian' archway, lower your camera a little, and you can take pictures that are exactly the same as in the movie. Because the 'Xing Xian' archway is now partially covered by lush foliage, it's impossible to completely reproduce the movie scene. 'Xing Xian' archway is located to the east of Jiaxing Kong Miao, 'Xing Xian' means appointing talented people, which is the foundation for the prosperity of a country. It was built in the ninth year of the Song Chunqiu (1249), and there's another 'Yucai' archway on the west side, built in the thirteenth year of the Yuan Zuijing (1353).The bridge that the Four Great Scholars walked across is called Bingxing Bridge, also known as Longmen Bridge, with a history of over 700 years. Walking across this bridge symbolizes 'Fish leaping through the Dragon Gate', 'flying to the clouds and reaching prosperity', and 'ascending to the sky', so almost every visitor who comes here will walk across it several times. Therefore, the Four Great Scholars appeared in a grand and flamboyant way, which adds to the humor of the movie. So, what's the reason behind this creative idea – intentional or accidental?

Then, after passing through the 'Xing Xian' archway, you can see a road about 100 meters long

This road also has several scenes in the movie, including Hua Lian taking the Four Fragrances into the temple and Tang Bohu's first encounter with Autumn Fragrance on the street

The movie's scenes were filmed from the 'Yucai' archway direction to the 'Xing Xian' archway direction, with a high-angle shotAs I couldn't stand so high to film, I could only take pictures at a normal angle. And the other scene is in the middle of Lake Xuanfeng in Jiaxing Kong Miao

The 'Yang Gao' archway on the left and right of 'Yang Gao' comes from the 'Analects of Confucius' - 'Looking up to increase height, drilling to increase firmness.' Confucius's most talented disciples, Yan Hui, used this to praise the vastness and profundity of Confucius's teachings. 'Yang Gao'

The 72 stone lions on the left and right sides of 'Yang Gao' and the main gate of Jiaxing Kong Miao behind the archway also appear frequently in the movie, especially when the Four Great Scholars squeezed into the crowd to see Autumn Fragrance. But most of these scenes are just fleeting, so if you're interested, you can go and see it yourself

By the way, let's introduce the Stone Fence Wall, where the 72 stone lions represent Confucius's 72 disciples. This scene, in the movie, is sure to be seen

Then, we come to the scene where Tang Bohu and Autumn Fragrance tease the ladies and compose poems, and these two scenes are filmed in the same place, which is about 50 meters away from the west gate of Huilontan Park

The shooting angle is quite simple, just standing on the hill can perfectly reproduce the scene. But when you see the movie, the back wall of the bridge is still a white wall, which has now been demolished and rebuilt

The several scenes that appear in the movie are all filmed within 50 meters of the west gate of Huilontan Park, and you can explore it in less than 30 minutes, and the ticket price is only 5 yuanIn fact, Huilontan Park has many other scenic spots worth visiting, such as the Hundred Birds Gathering Phoenix Platform, the Lord Chancellor's Tomb, and the Well Pavilion, etc. It's a fun experience to revisit the movie scenes while learning about the historical knowledge of these scenic spotsSo, have you been to Shanghai for travel?
