Wang Ze Ru's Legacy

Wang Ze Ru (1858-1931), also known as Wang Li Fu, was the founder of Moutai liquor. He established 'Ronghe Distillery' and was born in Moutai Town, Renwei County, Guizhou Province. Wang Ze Ru established 'Ronghe Distillery' towards the end of the Qing Dynasty, which became one of the two major distilleries in Moutai Town. 'Ronghe Distillery''s production, 'Wangmao', was commonly known as 'Wangmao'. In the late Qing Dynasty, Wang Ze Ru, using his family's secret recipe and techniques, produced 'Moutai' at 'Tianhe Distillery' and presented it to the Emperor, who was delighted and awarded Wang Tianhe the title of 'Honorable Minister'. Wang Li An and Wang Li Fu established 'Ronghe Distillery' in 1879 based on 'Tianhe Distillery' and expanded it with others, producing 'Ronghe Liquor' (also known as 'Wangmao'). In 1915, Wang Ze Ru's descendants presented 'Wangmao' at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, California, and won a gold medal. This established 'Wangmao' as the foundation for Moutai liquor becoming a world-renowned wine.

In 1915, the 'Panama International Exposition' was held in San Francisco, California, as a celebration of the completion of the Panama Canal. The North Government's Department of Commerce and Agriculture decided to select 'Moutai' liquor produced in Moutai Town, Renwei County, Guizhou Province, to exhibit. 'Ronghe Distillery''s 'Wangmao' and 'Hua Mao' produced by 'Hua Yi Distillery' were presented by the North Government under the name 'Moutai Distillery' and exhibited at the Panama Exposition. After strict appraisal by the judges at the exposition, Moutai liquor won a gold medal, along with Scotch whisky and French Cognac, and became one of the world's three major distilled wines. It was also awarded a gold medal. This further enhanced China's long-standing brewing industry and gained international recognition.

Because the distillery was located in Moutai, Wang's 'Ronghe Distillery''s production was called 'Wangmao', while Hua's 'Hua Yi Distillery''s production was called 'Hua Mao'.

In 1915, Sun Quan Tai withdrew from the partnership due to personal reasons, and 'Rongtaihe Distillery' was renamed 'Ronghe Distillery'.

In 1949, 'Ronghe Distillery' was managed by Wang Pengqian, the grandson of Shi Rongxiao, and its liquor was commonly known as 'Wangmao'.

In 1951, the government merged the three private distilleries of Ronghe (Wangmao), Hua (Hua Mao), and Heting (Lai Mao) through redemption, confiscation, and takeover, to establish the state-owned Guizhou Moutai Distillery. 'Wangmao' liquor's legendary history was gradually buried in the fog of history.

Centuries of history of 'Wangmao' finally revealed its secrets. Wang Ze Ru's wine series has adhered to the family's ancient craftsmanship and techniques, and has combined traditional craftsmanship with modern production equipment and testing methods. Wang Zongde continued his ancestor's craftsmanship, and his wine has become a classic through generations, with its essence carefully preserved. Wang Zongde's wine has a history of more than 100 years, produced by the descendants of Wang Zongde, strictly according to Wang's family's secret formula, and is known as 'Centennial Wangmao'.

After the Reform and Opening-up, Wang Zongde's grandson, Wang Zongde, continued the last branch of Wang's family's 'Ronghe Distillery', established Wang Zongde Distillery, upheld the family's honest and trustworthy tradition, using locally grown red sorghum from the Moutai Valley and clear water from the Chang River, to produce pure and original-flavored wine – Guizhou Moutai Town 'Wangmao Liquor'. In production, Wang Zongde personally undertook every step, from pounding the mortar and pestle, steaming the grain, fermenting, and distilling, to carefully handling each grain to extract the maximum flavor. After decades of experience, he could distinguish different flavors of the wine, picked the best grapes, pounded the grain and fermented to produce the best wine. This extraordinary skill is the foundation of Wang Zongde Distillery's success today. His hands and wine are almost one.

Wang's family's 'Wangmao' craftsmanship has been passed down through generations, and after the Reform and Opening-up, the descendants of Wang Li An and Wang Li Fu rebuilt 'Wang Li Fu Distillery' on the original site of 'Rongtaihe Distillery' and established 'Renwei Shi Wang Qiuhan Liquor Workshop', inheriting the traditional brewing techniques and unique blending techniques of 'Wangmao' and restoring the original flavor of 'Wangmao' produced in 1915, which won a gold medal.
