200 Jin Small Catfish Delivered! Wuhan Zoo's 'Bear Children' No Longer Need to Go Hungry

On February 1st at 1 p.m., a plea for help from Wuchang Zoo drew the hearts of netizens – Wuchang Zoo’s ‘bear children’ – penguins, pelicans, and cranes faced a food shortage!

At 1 p.m. on February 1st, Wuchang Zoo issued a plea for help on Weibo. Due to transportation restrictions, many local Wuchang supermarkets’ aquatic products were cut off, and Wuchang Zoo was running out of warehouse space, having exhausted its stored feed. The zoo’s animals were at risk of starvation. Pelicans, cranes, and penguins were the first to face a ‘survival crisis’.

Pelicans feed on small carp, cranes eat live carp or small carp daily, while penguins’ food consists of young herring or yellow croaker. Daily, the zoo needed to prepare 40 pounds of small carp, 30 pounds of live carp eels, and 30 pounds of young herring or yellow croaker.
The most desirable supplies were young herring, followed by yellow croaker. Fresh freshwater small miscellaneous fish and live carp eels were best. Small carp were the most urgent need.
After the plea for help was issued, it quickly gained attention and support from netizens. Soon, netizens provided a batch of frozen yellow croaker to help the penguins alleviate their urgent situation. Gao Xiaosong and Weibo celebrity ‘The Aquarium Man’ also joined in.

Upon receiving the news, (Hema) staff immediately contacted Wuchang Zoo to have them select freshwater fish in the store. Any fish that could be eaten by the waterbirds could be freely supplied.
(Hema) stated that, under the condition that it would not affect people’s supply, (Hema) called for 500 pounds of small carp and 200 pounds of carp eels to Wuchang Zoo.

On February 2nd at 1 p.m., the first shipment of 200 pounds of carp eels was transported to (Hema) stores in Wuchang, and Wuchang Zoo staff picked it up and took it away. Another 500 pounds of small carp is on its way. The animals’ food problem has been solved.
