White-lipped Lizard
Calotes mystaceus
Vertebrates, Class Reptilia, Order Squamata, Family Iguanidae, Genus Calotes. Common name Arrow Mane Lizard, commonly found in the edges of forests between 820-1100 meters, active around cultivated land, only distributed in Yunnan in China. Photo taken in Menglian, Pu'er.
The White-lipped Lizard's colors are very rich, their lips are wrapped in a white stripe, which is also the origin of its name. The back is grayish-brown or olive-green, the ventral side is dirty white, male lizards are a bit darker, with 3-5 rust-red or brown large spots on the sides. Under different conditions, the White-lipped Lizard will also change color, like dancers attending the Brazilian Carnival after makeup. They mainly feed on agricultural pests, once disturbed, they will run into shrubs or climb on large vines, revealing their throat pouch.
