African Porcupine
Porcupines (Genus: Phacochoerus): Weighing 50-150 kg. The genus has only 2 species, the African porcupine and the desert porcupine. Named for the warts beneath the eyes, and males have a pair of smaller warts on the muzzle, which may help protect the eyes when digging for food. The head is large, accounting for one-third of the body length. The back has a mane. They have 4 teeth, long and sharp.
They live alone or in groups in burrows. They eat grass, moss and root vegetables, and occasionally eat carrion. They like to bathe in mud. They have a strong survival ability, adapting to hot and dry environments and can survive for months without water. They have strong reproductive abilities, but the baby mortality rate is high. Predators such as lions, leopards, hyenas, etc., prey on them. They are aggressive.
The African porcupine is a small to medium-sized odd-toed ungulate, weighing 50-150 kg, with a body length of 0.91-1.5 meters and a height of 0.64-0.85 meters. The head and body proportion is severely distorted, the huge head accounts for about one-third of the body length, which looks heavier than the body itself. Except for the wart-like warts that make the porcupine look grotesque, the 4 large teeth are even more frightening. The upper incisors of male porcupines are large, with males measuring 26-64 cm and females measuring 15-26 cm, and they are steeply curved upward and outward. The short and sharp lower incisors can be used as knives.
The skin under the eyes of the African porcupine has a pair of large warts, so it is named. The warts on the muzzle are longer in males, located above the teeth. When digging for food, these warts may help protect the eyes and make the head appear larger, making the African porcupine look more grotesque.
Adult porcupines have different colors. Besides the gray mane on the back, they have sparse hair on their bodies.
African porcupines prefer warm climates and are limited to the humid and dry African deciduous savanna, open woodlands and forests, usually living in areas with permanent surface water. They are generally found in forests, thickets, cool mountain grasslands and deserts.
Desert porcupines rely on rainfall and moisture and occupy areas with rainfall of 100-600 mm per year. They avoid areas with heavy rainfall and the hottest and driest deserts, with rainfall less than 100 mm. They are not actually desert animals.
Habits
Porcupines are social animals, often forming small family teams consisting mainly of female porcupines and young porcupines. Males live alone except during mating. Porcupines are the only pigs in the world that can survive for months without water and can live in environments with high temperatures. They like to bathe in mud, and they also smear mud on their bodies like rhinos, which can cool them down and eliminate parasites.
Burrows
Porcupines basically live in burrows, which can help them avoid predators and prevent sunburn. Although they are very good at digging holes, they still use existing holes dug by other animals as their homes. When entering these holes, they enter with their hindquarters first, and their heads always face the hole, so they can first use their teeth to confront intruders. In the morning, they will rush out of the burrow at high speed to avoid any predators waiting at the hole.
Diet
They forage during the day, eating grass, moss and root vegetables, and occasionally eating rotten meat.
Predators
Weak porcupines appear to be bullied by carnivorous predators, but their teeth are a sharp weapon. Experienced leopards and cheetahs will be injured or killed by the teeth. When facing lions, they often have no counter-force. Lions prey on porcupines, especially during the rainy season when plants grow tall, making it easier for lions to ambush. Lions often dig porcupines out of the holes, and many scars on lions are the result of fighting with porcupines.
